Mini Terrariums for Your Wedding!

I must have been 5 years old. This memory very vivid I’m surprised I recall this much.  I was playing dress-up (or dress-down depending on how you want to look at it) in my mom’s silky, Chinese adorned, bathrobe—slippers included. Precariously pressing my slender fingers up to the glass, the giant bubble accumulating fog, blocking my view as I smooshed my face up against the encased eco-system.

Day dreaming about what it would be like to live inside the earthy atmosphere of a huge terrarium that possessed an entire space under two window panes of our apartment. I used to talk to the little creatures that I thought lived there. . .  maybe I was talking to the ferns that occupied the space. Either way, mom told me that talking to the plants made them healthier and there I stood on a stool trying to get a better view from the opening above.

This terrarium started it all. I wanted to build my own and my fascination of a small world within the bubble has never ceased, even to this day. Apparently they have made a comeback and are making more of a presence than ever before!

About a week ago, my mom sent me an article she found in the NY Times and mailed it to me. The title? You guessed it. Terrariums Make a Comeback Wooot! Now, I’m not a member of the paper so I don’t have the link to the article, however, I did look up the stores that were mentioned.

I did a little digging—spent quite a while enthralled—and once again, found myself staring at these little bubbles of dirt and succulents.

Needless to say, I happened upon this super cute idea that Susie, a floral designer, at Flora Grubb Gardens made for a couple at their wedding. They are called cube terrariums and come in various sizes starting at 2.5 x 2.5.

Happy plann(t)ing! And in the meantime, I’ll post an image of my own terrarium I have at my place. . .

Boojum Tree | Hidden Garden – Phoenix Wedding Venue

In my quest to find a cute and earth-friendly wedding venue in Phoenix, I had recently attended an open house during a vendor event that took place at the Boojum Tree.

I am currently waiting to hear back from them as to whether or not they are Green but I couldn’t resist mentioning their destination wedding spot because of the quaint, beautiful garden and greenhouse that they use during the winter and spring months to host weddings. In speaking with one of the owners, she explained that the reception room is a working greenhouse during the summer. For me, it couldn’t be more perfect of a spot… unless of course, they are eco-conscious! I’ll update this post as soon as I hear.

Here are a few of the pictures I took from that evening: Oh! And in case you were wondering if they have an actual Boojum Tree on the property.. they don’t. I found that disappointing but, none-the-less, it’s still a very cute place!

DIY Fave Day – Something Scrumptious

Found this really cool post for a Do It Yourself goodie idea and have to share this with my eco-savvy brides. How about scrumptious Cupcakes in a Jar??!

My love for mason jars has become even more obvious to me over the last few weeks and there are so many neat ways to incorporate jars into a wedding. Some other ideas would be: tying cooking string around them to dangle from the ceiling in clusters, potting small succulents as centerpieces for tables, placing flowers in the jar to use as a vase, filling jars with candy, hmm maybe putting lightening bugs inside the jars (only last minute and only for a couple of hours – have the guests release them later).  =)

The Wright House | Mesa, AZ DIY Wedding

Amanda and her mother met with me regarding her plans of tying the knot with Shane on a Tuesday afternoon at the beautiful and quaint location of the Wright House in Mesa. A seemingly undiscovered venue in Arizona, this little gem brought back memories of a stroll through a European style garden with cobblestone walkways, blooming roses, orange trees, and a multitude of medieval statues and fountains.

Here are a few images from their wedding day:Creative Inspiration

With a bit of research and creativity, Amanda and her bridesmaids as well as her mom and aunt got together and designed their own bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres, and center pieces. The flowers came from places like Trader Joe’s, and local grocery stores who can make special orders and get them at a less expensive price than florist shops. Some of the more specialty flowers came from http://fiftyflowers.com .

Amanda: “we had to do a lot of foot-work to find which stores carried what
kinds of flowers, but it was worth it!”

You know what’s great about mid-week weddings?

I have been getting a lot of inquiries from my brides about Tuesday weddings.

Week rates are much less expensive and you don’t have to worry about running into another bride or worry that the staff will be less attentive.

Since the wedding was during the week, Amanda had her pick of which section to be married in. We were able to take advantage of both the garden and the village for her bridal party pictures and made the most out of the space since we had it all to ourselves.

Colors of the Rainbow

Amanda always loved the colors of the rainbow and decided to incorporate those colors into her wedding day. As bridesmaids gifts, she bought shawls for each of the girls and let them pick out their own black dresses that they can always wear again.

Her birdcage veil and clip came from Sally’s Fabric store. The design of feathers from an image she found in a magazine and recreated out of accessories she bought from Michaels.

I saw feather “fascinators” in magazines, and I really wanted something big and ostentatious to put in my hair. The ones I saw in magazines were So Expensive (between 120-195 dollars for a little feather clip). I made mine for about 25 dollars.”

I just love the creativity that she put in to her wedding! Now that’s a DIY wedding.

Thank you Amanda & Shane. I wish you the best!!

Wish for a Dad

It was this time last year and well, I guess every time before then. It goes back to as far as I can remember.

One of the most meaningful gifts I’ve ever asked for is for a dad. Someone who was an admirable father figure in my life and one I could confide in when advice was needed. One I would be proud to bring in to class for father/daughter day. A father I could look up to with love and respect and receive the same in return.

I have one of the best mom’s anyone could ask for. She took on the role of both my mom and my dad. She did the best she knew how and I admire her for that and much more.

My mom’s best friend, Tony, sent both of us postcards from his travels, helped see me off to college, took my picture as a gift to my mom for her birthday and visited me when he was in the area on business and took me out for dinner and made sure I was eating well.

He has always been such a cool guy and someone I looked up to and felt comfortable talking to. Time went on and before I knew it, mom told me that she and Tony are getting married.

I had secretly never given up that one wish for Christmas. On my birthday, Tony asked me if I thought it would be alright for him to adopt me. “I’ve already checked into it and believe it’s still legal.” He said with a grin. I burst out laughing and crying at the same time because I had realized that it’s never too late for something, nor too old for a childhood dream to come true. I was, at last, getting my wish for a dad. It was probably one of the most emotional moments I had ever experienced.

Christmas Eve 2007, at 6:30 p.m. in the court room signing papers and standing before a judge. He granted my wish and I felt like a little girl, who, for the first time, knew how it felt to have my dad looking back at me with proud and loving eyes.

There’s always so much I am grateful for and this year I wanted to share with the world something that I’m especially grateful for this holiday season and will never forget.

I am so grateful to have such loving parents. I’ve always wanted to say that.

My parents; friends of 23 years, happily married for three. Their little goober in the middle; me. The family I’ve always wished for.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Scottsdale Fashion Show ~ Bridal with a Twist

When it comes to fashion I don’t pay much attention to the latest and greatest so I had no idea what I was walking into when the publisher of Phoenix school events + teen celebrations magazine contacted me to shoot the Scottsdale Fashion Show. I was in for a treat.  Check it out!

Here are some dresses from Destiny’s Bride for my Off Beat Brides. The choice of makeup and styling was certainly an interesting twist with the wedding gowns and definitely caught my eye.

Makeup by: Heather Wilson and Jill Fogel.

Eco-Elegant Wedding Show | Portland OR

eco-elegant_graphic_only

Today I was thinking about how cool it would be to visit Oregon and photograph a wedding out there. Oregon somehow manages to pop up in many of my conversations I have with people. I also managed to come across a website this evening promoting an eco-elegant wedding show happening right in Portland on November 21st at the Center for Architecture.

For the eco-conscious brides, this event will be hosting educational seminars regarding ideas for making “more sustainable choices for” your wedding day as well as a fashion show made up of re-claimed materials. (more…)

Taliesin West | Wedding Venue

I had the pleasure of second shooting for my friend at Muse Photography with a beautiful wedding that took place in Scottsdale at the Taliesin West.

Andy and I are thrilled that our pictures from Melissa & Chris’s wedding have been published on Style Me Pretty!

I met this adorable couple back in August, up in Prescott, with Andy to do their engagement session.

I absolutely love this image of Melissa. She could be a model for Anthropologie! (one of my favorite stores)

Here’s a few shots from their wedding day…
Chris was so floored when he saw Melissa right before the ceremony that he literally wanted a re-take, walked a few paces away and turned around again for another full view of Melissa. He couldn’t believe how beautiful she looked!
